What is feather edge fencing?

Feather edge fencing, also called featheredge or closeboard fencing, is built in place rather than dropped in as ready-made panels. Vertical feather edge boards are nailed to horizontal arris rails between the posts, each board overlapping the next to form a solid, continuous face.

There are no thin panel frames to twist in the wind, and individual boards can be swapped later without taking down a whole section.

Strength, privacy and durability

Because the boards overlap, there is virtually nothing to see through, which makes feather edge the go-to choice for privacy in gardens that back onto neighbours or footpaths. It is also the most robust timber fence we install.

We usually recommend concrete or pressure treated timber posts, gravel boards at the base to keep the boards clear of wet ground, and a capping rail on top to shed rain. Those details add years to the fence.

Feather edge fence installation in Woking

Closeboard is made on site, so it follows sloping and uneven ground far better than panels and can be built to the height the boundary needs rather than fixed panel sizes. It suits both older properties in Horsell and Maybury and newer homes around Goldsworth Park.

We walk the boundary with you, check access and ground conditions, and send a clear written quote after the visit. You can also see more on our garden fencing in Woking page if you are comparing styles.
